4-year project researcher position on particle-based cloud modeling at Univ of Hyogo

We are hiring a project researcher on particle-based cloud modeling starting at the earliest possible date. The researcher will participate in the JSPS KAKENHI Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (A) "From Particles to Precipitation: Toward a Deeper Understanding of Cloud Systems with the Super-Droplet Method" (PI: Shin-ichiro Shima)

The super-droplet method (SDM) is a particle-based numerical scheme that enables accurate simulation of clouds (Shima et al., 2009), which is gaining popularity in rencent years (Grabowski et al., 2019; Morrison et al., 2020). Using SDM, we developed SCALE-SDM, a detailed numerical model of mixed-phase clouds in which ice particle morphologies are explicitly predicted (Shima et al., 2020).

The purpose of this project is to quantify the extent to which using the SDM can improve the simulation of clouds and precipitation. To achieve this, we will perform numerical simulations for various types of clouds and compare them directly with observations. Specifically, we will focus on the microscopic structure of clouds and demonstrate that the SDM can accurately reproduce the size and shape of cloud droplets, raindrops, and ice particles. The successful candidate will work in collaboration with Dr Shin-ichiro Shima and other project members.
